Paid my state taxes today

As we all know, tomorrow is “TAX DAY” in the US. Although, for some reason the NYS website says that it’s Tuesday the 17th. I’m not sure why. Anywho, I owe good-old NYS $33. I tried to do it myself, and couldn’t get the figures to work out the way that TaxAct had them. SO I broke down and paid $12.95 for the NYS forms. I figured that I didn’t pay anything for tax software or to file my Federal Taxes a couple of months ago, so I just bit the bullet and paid it. Turns out if I had just rounded a bit better, I wouldn’t have had to pay it. Oh well. It’s done now. All I have to do is write the check and drop it in the mailbox.

I updated my Current Debt page, and even though my Patelco Visa total went up, I still owe less than I did on March 31. Not sure how that happened, but I’m not gonna try to figure it out.  Maybe it has something to do with the $500+ amount paid on my car this month. You see, I use this payment service to pay my car note. They deduct 1/2 of my car payment from my checking account every two weeks, and pay the note for me. It works out that you actually make 1 extra payment per year, and my budget feels better this way. I’ve been trying to get my bills ALL like that. You know, rent is $400/month, so each paycheck you save $200. For some reason, it hasn’t worked out that way for me. Maybe the next month where there are 5 checks I can get on track with that.

Someday I’d like to discuss the difference between Subsidized and Unsubsidized Student Loans. I don’t quite know the difference, and I think by researching it and talking about i, I will learn.

Off to a wedding today, gotta stop by Target and pick up a $25 gift card for the happy couple. Does anyone think that it is too small of a gift? It’s not exactly in my budget, but….well, I’m the only one from class that’s going and I feel bad for her.

Answering some comments

Thanks to Chris for his comment on my post yesterday. I want to address his concerns. Chris says, “Didn’t you spend 50 dollars? I figure just because you didn’t pay 2 dollars for a drink doesn’t mean you saved 2 dollars. It’s not like they gave you 2 dollars in exchange for drinking their coffee. I’d also have to say with a negative savings, you probably shouldn’t be buying a Coach briefcase- that’s probably why you’re in debt

Chris, yeah, you’re right, I did spend 50 dollars. BUT if I had to pay for that drink, I would have spent 2 dollars, so in a way, I saved it. As far as my savings goes, you obviously don’t know how to add very well. My savings is NOT negative, it’s just small. I could afford the Coach briefcase because I sold some miscellaneous crap on ebay. Matter of fact, I sold some silverware for about 3 times what I paid for it. The briefcase was used and had I had to pay full price, I would not have bought it. I’m not that far in consumer debt, I just paid off a credit card the other day.

Thanks to Krystal who says:

I like the floor plans available at Norstar, and it seems like a pretty good deal b/c it includes a lot of things!

Anyway I’ve been subscribing to your blog feed for a while now. Good luck getting the apartment! )

The reason I started this blog is to help others who may be in my situation. If I can help someone with my ideas AND chronicle my progress to my yet to be determined goals, then I feel good about that. I hope that I can get that apartment too!

I’m gonna try to move

I’ve been looking at apartments for the past month or so. My current lease is up on May 31, so I’m looking to move June 1. I found the perfect apartment for me. Norstar Apartments. It includes heat & hot water, community room, fitness center, pool, all electric appliances, self cleaning range, frost-free refrigerator, garbage disposal and dishwasher.  It’s just perfect. I’m going to call and see if I can set up an appointment to see them, fill out the application, and get myself on the list for June 1.

It’s a bit more than I am paying now, about $60/month. I think I can do it. It’s less than  $15/week or $30/pay period. That’s definitely doable.

I got my Coach briefcase today. It’s just as nice as the pictures. Needs a little black leather polish, but overall, great!

I saved  about $2 today when I got my free iced coffee from Dunkin Donuts. I spent about $50 on groceries, but I got fruits. Fruits are something I never buy, so I figured I’d buy some. So overall, I spent $48 dollars today.

Today is just another day

So, today is just another day to me. Trying to figure out how to pay off my debt. I’m going to schedule two payments to Orchard and Capital One today. Probably an extra $100. $75 on Orchard and $25 on Capital One. I will probably transfer an extra $100 to my ING Emergency fund. And I just wrote a check to Patelco CU for $50 for my accounts there.

I’m excited that one of my friends I told you about is excited about saving money. He finally realized the potential for saving money. I’m really glad I can help one of my friends out.

Final Bill

I get my final bill for my home phone in the mail today. Last month I switched to the all in one package offered by my cable company. The bill was for $21 for 8 days. It really should have been 5, but someone messed up the order and canceled the phone on the 20th, not the 17th. Anyways, I called and wondered what was going on, turns out they billed me for more days than they should, and I had a $.42 balance from last month. Don’t ask me how that happened, it doesn’t matter. It took 2 representatives and 40 minutes for them to realize that they charged me for another extra day. BUT, the rep I spoke to said to fax her the bill from my cable company, which clearly shows 2/17 as the installation day, and she will credit me what she can. Score one for me.

Forgot to pay my cable bill. I didn’t remember until just now. Score one for them.

I’m not sure if I should be doing more to help my cause. I was thinking about getting a second job, but the more I think about it, I think my time is more valuable resting. I just recently was declared cancer-free, but you never know when you’ll have a relapse. I think I should save my strength and rest up just in case.

That’s all for today.
